I love to help women feel beautiful from the inside out and to help families take a moment to be fully present and connect with each! I do that through my photography and also through sharing my own struggles here on my blog!

New Canaan Patch News- New Caanan, CT

Thank you to the New Canaan Patch and write Eugenie Diserio for printing my story and article about photographing your children like a pro! Four other towns picked it up for their news. That was fun!

I hope my New Canaan clients and other parents that read it got something from it! Thinking of doing another article with tips for photographing children another day.

In the meantime stay tuned for another article about me in the Wilton Bulletin, hopefully coming out next week!

Newborn Portraits- Baby’s First Year portraits- CT

That first year of your baby’s life just flies by, doesn’t it? I have three small children and barely remember them being babies! I am so thankful for all the pictures that I took! With my first two I just had my little point and shoot camera so the pictures are ok but with my third I had already started my photography business so his images are professional. The difference between the images I took with my “mommy camera” and with my professional camera are night and day. Same eye, different camera . Professional portraits come to life and capture all the little details so easily forgotten as they grow. Ten tiny fingers, ten tiny toes, the folds in the back of their neck, their big loving eyes, their toothless grins, their oh so soft skin and every other little detail that changes almost over night.

Here are some of the recent images from my Baby’s First Year portrait club. Some of my clients start with a maternity portrait session. This is most popular with moms having their first as well as moms who know it is their last! For the baby’s first year portraits, we do three sessions to show the stages of development: newborn, sitting and standing. The last session is often celebrated with a cupcake/cake smashing session. I so enjoy watching them discover the yummy treat and seeing their reaction as they realize mommy is going to let them eat it all!

Tip & Tricks for Creating Portraits of Your Children like a Pro!

Mother’s Day:  Tip & Tricks for Creating Portraits of Your Children like a Pro!

By Andrea Topalian, Certified Professional Photographer, Wilton, CT

www.momentsbyandrea.com

Happy Mother’s Day! Enjoy taking pictures of your children like a pro with these eight tips from Certified Professional Photographer, Andrea Topalian of Moments by Andrea in Wilton, CT.

  1. Look for the LIGHT! Ideal times of day are early morning or late afternoon before the sun goes down. If you have to shoot mid day then look for shade and position your children on the edge where it is still bright but there is no light overhead causing harsh shadows on their face. Try under a tree, on a covered porch or sitting in an open doorway. If you have to shoot with overhead sun then turn on that flash! It will fill in the harsh shadows!
  2. Get DOWN on their level. Enter their world. We are always looking down at our children and while that can be good for close up shots of those big eyes looking up at you, the rest of the time images taken at their level will be more emotional and natural looking.
  3. Get in CLOSE! Zoom in and capture the details of their expression and those cute little faces! This way you don’t have to worry about clutter in the background taking away from that face you adore!
  4. HAVE FUN! Go for NATURAL smiles! Gone are the days of saying “cheese” and getting those overdone fake smiles! Tell them a joke or say something that you know will make them laugh. For little ones, tell them something they know is wrong! Ex. “Tommy, want to hear me bark like a dog? OK! Here it goes… “meeoow!”  Have fun and you will get those natural smiles you adore so much!Be PATIENT! Photographing your own children can be a challenge but we are blessed to be in the digital world! We aren’t limited to a roll of 24 or 36 images so just keep shooting until you get those expressions that make you say “that’s so him/her”. I love it!
  5. Read up or take a lesson! Have you read your camera’s manual? You would be surprised at what your camera can do! Take an afternoon to read the manual and play around with the settings! Really love photography? Take a lesson! Every community offers photography courses and so do some photographers like me! Click here to learn about the lessons that I offer!
  6. Keep the images safe! We don’t print as many pictures as we used to! Some of my clients admit to never printing any of their pics! Be sure to back them up on DVD and upload them to a lab that lets you store unlimited images!  I have been uploading my images to Shutterfly monthly since my oldest daughter was born in 2003. At the end of each month I go and pick my favorites to print! At the end of the year I pick a handful from each month to create an annual calendar! The family looks forward to the calendar every year!
  7. Happy Mother’s Day! Be sure to hand the camera to someone else so the children will have images of you together! Too many moms say they are waiting to lose weight or to have their hair and makeup done! Don’t! You never know what tomorrow will bring and besides, you are perfect in their eyes already!

Head Shots on location- Wilton, CT

I recently updated the head shots for my hair salon’s website. We used natural window light for these on location portraits. I like to incorporate the beautiful salon wallpaper as a background!  Steven Mancini Salon is the hottest salon in Fairfield County and we are lucky to have them in Wilton! These are some of their new hires along with some updated head shots of a few veteran stylists. Can you believe how beautiful these employees are! And you should see the clients when they walk out of there! I won’t go anywhere else!

First Communion Portraits- Fairfield County CT -Wilton

I am a bad portrait photographer blogger! I have gotten so addicted to the ease and fun of facebook posting that I have ignored my blog. I am pretty sure I am not the only photographer that posts more sneak peak portraits on facebook than in their blog. Funny thing is that we can link our blog post to facebook with the click of a button AND we can fit more words in a blog post AND it links back to our website so WHY do I keep posting on facebook? I don’t know!

Well, the rainy season has hit Connecticut and Wilton is getting its’ fair share of it! Gotta love New England! The old saying is true “If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute”. Yesterday was freezing then it rained and today was beautiful! I had a First Communion Portrait session scheduled for tomorrow but we decided to move it to today because MORE RAIN is coming to Fairfield County tonight, tomorrow and the next day! Soo glad we got in this beautiful outdoor portrait session. My yard, like most of CT is not in bloom yet BUT we do have Forsythia down by the road and the year round pine trees. I also think the lines of the bare trees can also be beautiful soft focus in the background of a portrait!

I have to say that I LOVE photographing girls’ First Communion Portraits! Boy’s sessions are fun too, they are so handsome in their little man jackets and ties! There is just something so magical about an adorable 7 or 8 year old girl in her white communion gown filled with excitement to finally be wearing her communion dress! I also have a special place in my heart for this age as these girls are the same age as my oldest daughter and it is a wonderful age!

This little girl today was no exception! She was so vivacious and her eyes just sparkled! Perfect way for me to kick off my outdoor Spring First Communion Portrait season! It was fun and quick and she was beautiful! Here are a few sneak peaks from today!
